Honfleur

Honfleur is a Norman port municipality located on the south bank of the Seine estuary, opposite Le Havre, very close to the outlet of the Normandy bridge. It is best known for its Vieux Bassin, characterized by its houses with facades covered with slate, and for having been repeatedly represented by artists, including Gustave Courbet, Eugène Boudin, Claude Monet and Johan Barthold Jongkind, forming the School of Honfleur who contributed to the appearance of the impressionist movement. Alphonse Allais and Erik Satie were born there in the same street.

The city and the port were officially founded by King François Ier in 1517. Economic development in modern times is hampered by religious wars, conflicts with the English, epidemics and storms. It was from the end of the 18th century that Le Havre grew and the port took off thanks to the slave trade and then to international trade. After the bombardments of 1944, Auguste Perret's workshop undertook to rebuild the city in concrete. In 2005, Unesco listed the city center as a World Heritage Site. The André-Malraux Museum of Modern Art becomes the second in France for the number of Impressionists.
